A kind stranger snapped this photo of me with Dawkins in the background at the American Atheists conference this weekend. The stranger had seen me awkwardly attempting to take the photo myself - thank you for your help!
Dawkins' keynote speech was the best part of the conference. The whole conference offered an interesting insight into the culture of atheism. I must admit I was a little disappointed. The attendees and speakers didn't seem as thoughtful and balanced as the atheists bloggers I have on my daily reading list.
I did that last year when I attended an event where Ayaan Hirsi Ali was the speaker. I couldn't get anyone to take a picture of me next to her, so I held up the camera in front of me as Ayaan stood behind me. If you go to my June 2007 archive, you can see the photo.
Your comment gives me some hope. However, I didn't get the impression that many people were in any sort of disagreement with the speakers. Its been my experience that "Minnesota Nice" is actually "Minnesota Passive Aggressive" and while people may not express direct confrontational disagreement they still let you know they disagree through a uniquely midwestern smile-through-the-teeth coldness.

Hey zeolite, you have to remember, this is Minnesota, we don't speak up or oppose people. We listen and quietly disagree - PZ Myers aside.

Plus all the speakers got standing ovations.
I've got to attend one of those. By the way, you're adorable!
